Hispanic Outreach

Judith Caraballo Arzuaga, Director of Hispanic Ministry, has seen the growing population of Hispanic immigrants coming to Wayne County from Central and South America and from California, especially the Los Angeles area. We are building community and working to meet the many challenges Hispanic immigrants face every day. Coming from a warm to very hot climate, most immigrants arrive in Ohio unprepared for the winter weather. Early in the fall the church community of St. Mary donated more than 200 blankets to help our Latino brothers and sisters.

In November 2005 St. Mary’s church community members donated and cooked seven turkeys with the fixings, and received 35 to 40 Hispanics for a dinner provided for them to celebrate Thanksgiving. The early immigrants of this country were remembered as Fr. Dan Reed, St. Mary Associate Pastor, explained the tradition of this custom. “ Just as the Native American Indians welcomed the early immigrants, we now continue the tradition and welcome you as we, together, give thanks to God”.

Along with meeting the physical needs, we also provide spiritual growth for the Spanish speaking population of Wooster and neighboring towns. For the first time St. Mary celebrates a Mass in Spanish on the first and third Saturday of every month. There is Sacramental preparation offered for children as well as for adults. This is provided in Spanish.

The Hispanic community is slowly approaching the doors of St. Mary as the parishioners there open their arms to embrace their newly found brothers and sisters in Christ.

We welcome you to join us in praise of our wondrous God!
